Default Leaking transmission 1994 FLHTCU

Goodmorning (well it is over here...) all,

My transmission seems to have developed a leak...and it's coming from the sidecover?

On the right hand side of the bike you have the small chrome cover wich houses the clutch pulling mechanism (whatever that's called).
Behind that there's a larger secondary cover and it's there that it leaks quite badly...seems to be weeping from the gasket.

I still don't have the manual in so I've no idea if it's a relatively smal operation to take both covers off to fit a new gasket?

Can anyone shed some light on this? I know how to take the first cover off but the second...no idea what I'll find in there!

Thanks a lot for helping out (again!)

Take a looksee here.....http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....USING-ASSEMBLY

You can find a breakdown of the parts and see what's involved in taking them apart.

Hi from the UK. You can get that manual (in English at least!) from your local Harley dealer and if you fancy tackling this job yourself this is the time to buy it! My manual shows the entire gear assembly built up on that inner cover, so you may need to start by dismantling the primary side, to remove the clutch, before withdrawing the gears from the r/h side.

That's really usefull, cheers!

So it's the actual bearinghousinggasket that's weeping...if I understand the drawing correctly I should be able to pull that off fairly easily, fit a new gasket and re-assemble?

Oops! Didn't see your reply when I typed my previous one!

That means I'm done for now...I have a new engine waiting to go in after this summer...not now so I don't particulary feel like removing the gearbox and primary...guess I'll have to clean my drive a lot this summer!

Did you try tightening the bolts?

the second cover where you think your leaky gasket is, is commonly referred to as the "trap door". To change that particular gasket involves removing the primary cover, then the primary chain assembly, and all of the associated clutch basket parts. Then the top cover and shift drum. After all that, then the trap door and gear train can be pulled. There's a sticky at the top titled "Failed Tranny Pulley " with a lot of pictures that'll give you an idea of what you're in for.

OK, time to tell - what mischief are you up to and what engine?! The time to change that is right now, as the primary has to come out for that as well, a perfect time to sort out that trans leak and get your bike on the road.

Haha!

Well, I've no time to sort it now as I'm extremely busy with all sorts of projects and I NEED to ride, RIGHT NOW.

So it'll have to wait untill winter...

The engine I have is a new S&S superstock stroker engine.

Not the most suited for a bagger in the sense that S&S doesn't really run as lazy as you'd like, but should have enough oomph...

I also have a new S&S stroker engine with racing heads, dual plugs etc. and some other mods but that's a silver engine and the black and chrome will look better I think.
