Default FLHTC Front fork up grade????

This is going to go back to a previous post I had about changing the handlebars on my '88 Ultra. It has the air in the bars for the front forks. Id like to change the bars but not sure what to do about the air in the bars. I'm a little leary about modifying the air "chamber".

So here's my question....... Can I upgrade the front end to a newer model, say 2004, that doesn't have the air? My thought was that this would make it possible to install whatever bars and grips I want but it would also give me more options on front wheel upgrades. I realize I may have to change rotors, calipers, brake lines and maybe more. Am I overthinking this and looking at spending more money than its worth.

There are simpler things you can do, instead of changing forks:
  1. use single-rate springs, matched to your weight, that alone will enable you to eliminate the air system,
  2. add aftermarket dampers to the above, such as Emulators or Intiminators, which claim to improve damping and ride quality,
  3. use one of the aftermarket cartridge inserts, which should improve on either of the above.

if you're thinking about changing the front end, now it the perfect time to update to Brembos.
