Default Dellorto DHLA40

Picked up an engine last night (needed it for a project) and that came with what looks to be a new Dellorto DHLA40 with aircleaner, inletmanifold and fitting kit.

Paid 50 for it, worth anything?

50 for the whole engine? Or the carb?

Getting one of those to run right is a true art. There are those that have done it. They do look cool.

NO not 50 for the whole engine! I wish!

No, a new Dellorto with manifold, fitting kit (flanges) and aircleaner.

Seems that if you know what you're doing with them they're a good carb?

Well, it is certainly worth $50. The manifold alone is worth that. Probably more to someone that wants one. The carb, if new, is worth a hundred or two. Problem is that when you buy one of those, you buy it with a particular set of everything, and EVERYTHING is adjustable and EVERYTHING is expensive. So, if you can't use it just how it is set up now, it will probably cost someone more to make it work on their motor than just buying a new one set up closer. Choke tubes, for example, are expensive by themselves and will vary depending on what your HP/flow is. Oh, they are a good carb, if they are set up. But unless you have a full set of DelOrto everything, it will cost you a small fortune to get it set up.

I have a pair of 40DHLA's on my shelf. I paid $106 for them, used, with a manifold that I sold for $100, leaving me six bucks in the pair. 2 40's are good for a 1.6L motor that is not tuned too much. At about 160HP, you probably need a pair of 45's, for example. A 40 on a Harley big twin is probably a tad on the small size even with the biggest chokes, but if set up right should provide good low end response.

Oh, and getting parts for them is a total biatch.

If it was mine, I'd ebay the whole thing. You'll probably get at least two bills out of it, maybe 3. Oh, and if you had to go buy what you have new, it would probably be closer to 5 or 6, just guessing, and maybe double that.

Is the manifold a split or joined plenum?

I had an exchange somewhere on HDF with the proud owner of a Dellorto carb, looking for a specific Harley manifold, made by one of the US tuning shops, don't recall the brand. I looked them up on Ebay and the one manifold up for sale at the time was expensive! Frankly I can't see the point of trying to make a car carb work on a bike, especially one that is out of production. On the other hand there is probably a car buff out there very happy to take it off you, courtesy Ebay.

Back in the 1980s I bought a pair of those carbs new for my Chevette HS (dohc and 16 valves, 2.3 litres) and had it properly tuned on a rolling road, but the carbs were still in production back then.

The manifold is a cast piece, two runners joining up in the middle, then exiting to both heads.

It's complete with the rubber flanges, bracket (to support the carb) and the carb as well as aircleaner.

I like it but know I probably would leave it on the shelf looking cool so I'm game to sell it but I'd want top-dollar to be brutally honest and I can imagine that owuld put you off, knowing what I've paid for it.

But hey ho, every one needs a bit of luck now and then and this one might pay me some bike-bills so...
