Do you have an aftermarket ignition? I bet someone wired it in direct to the ignition switch. Pinched wire won't affect anything. Measure the voltage on the + side of your coil with the ignition on, kill switch on. Should be +12V. With the ignition on, kill switch off, it should be 0. Start tracing back from the coil +. There should be 2 white wires, one of which should eventually makes it up to the kill switch, through a connection. The other white wire on the + goes to the ignition module.
OK...Pinced to the point of shorted to something else...Probably Not Ground in this case..But pinched to ground [handlebar] is not at all uncommon on H-D controls....Folks don't pay enough attention when re-assembling.
Edit; Never heard of anybody wiring an aftermarket ignition directly to the keyswitch...But...There is one born every minute, and on re-read it sure sounds like what has been done...Instructions be Damned!
I will add this, that is how the switch worked when I bought the bike from a "hacker". I replaced the handle bars with dimple in them and took the extra step to machine them as to run wires inside. Checked for loose connection, pinched wires, all was well.I shortened the harness because I removed 16"apes. All connections are great heat shrink and all that. HOWEVER my forgettfullnes sucks, after painting and reassembling the bike is when I said F @#% , I wanted to trace that white wire everywhere because that has to be the culprit. The switch should be good because it does block starting when it's on. I know, pull the tank and seat and follow it.
In don't think pulling tank and seat to start...Start at the coil..
One side 12v the other side trigger from ignition module...If two white wires are there...One should go to ignition module, and one to KillSwitch. Only.
BTW..If there is a Pink wire...that is tach, attached with trigger
Ok,there are two wires, a blue and white wire coming out of tube, blue top, white on bottom and another white wire by itself also going to the bottom terminal. Ing on ,kill switch in "run" position and "off"position there is12volts to both terminals.three wires total, no pink .
