Although cold winter weather is still hanging on here in the great white north I can't wait any longer and have to get working on the bike. I plan on pulling the ultima tranny and dropping in the old tranny and gearset. I had completely rebuilt the old tranny before I had the case bolt hole crack and has since been welded and retapped. I am going to of course install all new seals and gaskets in the tranny and out into the primary as this tranny sat on the shelf for quite a while.
I spoke with an old time harley builder and he had told me a few things and wanted to see what your guys thoughts were on this,
1. never use sealant such as gasgacinch anywhere in the tranny for gaskets or basicly anywhere on the motor
2. the oil breather line should have no breather outfit on it at all and should be pointed down toward the ground as soon as possible after exiting the motor
I agree with 1, but not so sure about 2! I ran a breather and filter on the end of it for many years on my original engine, with no problems. It still made an oily mess over time, as would a bare pipe.
Graham his point with 2 was because any bends upward with the oil line would cause pressure build up in the bottom end. This he said causes the oil weeping.
#1 yes, #2 always down, never up and I would definitely use a filter. Sort of a catch can do you don't drop straight to the ground. Not a perfect pea fix but it helps and just changer it out as it will get saturated....
I don't recall the breather pointing at the chain. "Back in the olden-days" the oil pump had a separate output for the chain, with an adjuster on it so you could get the right number of drops per mile.
Breather: Pointed down with or without a filter on it. Got a filter on my bike, none on the Sporty. On my shovel, I had no filter, just pointing down.

Early last year when I rebuilt my motor I rerouted the breather line up to the frame and then followed the frame out to the back with no filter or anything else.
So far no problems.
Hey Lynn,agree with one but not two,here is why and this was discussed before two months ago and caught some craps over it but here it is again. I bought 86 evo basket case with crankcase vent run down to back frame smack dab lined up for the rear wheel to ride on the dripping oil from the saturated filter,oil everywhere. Crankcase should be vented to the back of the air filter as stated in the s-m. I have a K&N with the 3/8 vent hose fitted next to the carb and any mist will be recycled and harm nothing including the air filter which is clean from any oil other than the K&N oil I spray on it when doing routine maintenance, no mess no consumption no case pressure what so ever for MANY miles and I don't ride like my grandma in her rambler.However if you kink the hose in any way you will block it from venting and causing pressure creating leaks. Easy as pie.
