Default 1984 FLHTC upgrades.

Hi all,

I have a 1984 FLHTC and Im looking at doing some motor work and also looking at doing some other upgrades and needed some guidance and some knowledge.

I would like to change the transmission from a tapered shaft to a spline shaft. I have a revtech 5 speed from a build that I started to sell off. could I take all the internals from this and put them into the stock case in my bike?

I would like to upgrade to a newer style started but that would mean changing the transmission case and inner primary for sure. If I was to do this what year ranges of transmission and from what bike could I use?

Hopefully someone on here has the answers I need. I have been googling trying to find answers for days now.

thanks in advance.

I would not use the rev-tech...tons of people have had problems with them, and OEM gearsets can be found on ebay cheap from someone who has changed to a six speed.

If you use a 89-93 inner primary you can modify your current trans case to work with it and the newer type starter.

If you use a 94-up trans you can move the oil tank under the the trans which makes it easy to move the battery under the seat...which allows you to use newer bags which is what i did to my 83...lots of pics here:

Awesome post. I might start picking your brain about doing the upgrades if you don't mind! How would one go about modifying the current case to work with the newer primary and starter?
