Default Left axle spacer - 41595-86

On the left axle spacer, p/n 41595-86, there are two grooves on one side of it. Do the grooves face toward the outside by the frame, or do they face inside toward the bearing? I'm assuming grooves go out but the manual does not really clarify or I'm reading it wrong. It may not matter but I know the spacers on the front wheel have a way to go on. Thanks.

The grooves mean nothing.
You put the tapered edge of the spacer toward the bearing.

Looking at it now, it looks like there is a tapered side. The side with the grooves is flatter. I guess because this spacer is old it looks worn on both sides so it was hard to tell. Thanks again.

Building a bike from 93 softail frame... I'm presuming that the brake caliper assembly acts as a spacer on the right side of the rear wheel/axle?

On a typical softail frame there are 3 spacers for the rear axle. 2 on the left side and one on the right side..

So the two spacers that partially fit inside the wheel up against the bearings, and the one with the 3 grooves in it?

The one with the grooves sits against the bearing with the groove side facing the left or frame..

Correct. Two short spacers, one on each side that fit against the bearing and the seal rides on. Caliper mount is the spacer for the right and the one long spacer on the left.

If the short spacers have grooves, those are wear marks from the wheels seals and should be lightly dressed with sandpaper or replaced.

Grooves or not on the 41595-86 it doesn't matter which way it goes - it only touches on the ends.

For 90 Fatboy, some confusion based on parts manual. Pages attached (hopefully)

Not sure exactly how to read this for the solid wheel but looks like
  • 43654-86A (item #47) would be one on left and one on right (shows as quantity 2). It is 0.732" long
  • 41595-86 (item #30) "rear axle left" would be the second left side spacer. It is the one with grooves and is 1.25" long
Clear from mounting that two spacers are needed on left side; otherwise belt not centered under belt guard.

Am I reading this correctly??
