Here's a dumb question: Why is the compensator called a "compensator"? What is it compensating for?

The "compensator" serves as a "cushion" in the driveline to soften the shock of the power strokes of the motor at low engine speed-usually when taking off from a stop. It has the same function as a cushion hub, which some bikes use.

Back in the Panhead days, the compensator was an extra-cost option.

I've been chasing a bottom end noise to the point i was giving up and figuring the motor was shot , Today i tried everything , compensator i was hoping it was shot , nope it was fine , front motor mount i put in a couple weeks ago was fine , chain looks good so with the primary cover off I started the bike ----Holy **** that chain was bouncing up and down smacking the case lurching and jumping it was the Haydon tensioner I have the instructions and it was set right i guess the springs were worn out , took a shovel shoe and mounting bracket of my shelf set it up and started it up nothing but a nice whirrrrring noise , pretty happy right now

My Hayden M6 did the same thing to me but it stretched the chain in the process.
Needless to say I have the M6 in a box in the shed.
I did call Hayden and they sent me some extra springs though!!!

Seems to me that more automated things are, the more the problems. As in the m6. because it's an auto tensioner we tend to forget to check things on a regularly scheduled basis. That alone causes more issues than not...

Big Dave I think what your problem is its not going all the way in low gear and when you add power it jumps out and then back into gear. You might try adjusting the detent as this could cause the gear to break.
