Default Speedometer

I've got a 1989 FLHTC and I'm wanting to put on late model wheels. Does anybody make a speedometer sensor for the transmission on the older bikes? My speedo is cable drive from the front wheel. Or any other ideas, I just can't have something in my dash that doesn't work.

The only way of providing a tranny speedo drive is to change your tranny to a later one, which can be done. I'm doing the same thing with a recent front wheel and intend adapting the speedo drive. Tell us more about the wheels you plan to use, so we can help you better.

Default Speedo

I'm not sure of the wheels yet, I've got a few laying around mostly later model FLH wheels.

When they say a softail transmission, do the mean a swing arm frame trans or is it just for a softail? A friend has a 1998 model trans from his fatboy when he changed it out to a 6 speed that I can get cheap. Will this one work?

has to be a rubbermount tranny.

the roadking was the first evo to switch to a tranny sensor...that may be your best bet...but then you need a speedo, 'cause your in dash will only work as a cable drive.
none of the electronic speedos will match the one in your dash.

you could maybe change the center console to a RK type, rk speedo..& rk tank for the fill

...these better be really nice wheels!

Thanks, that's why I'm on here asking questions, so I don't do to many stupid things. I'd rather ask now than pay later.

Why not go with wheels that are supposed to be for your bike? There are thousands of styles and makes to choose from.

I guess what am I really saying is why are you doing something that will cause a problem for the speedometer that cannot be corrected cheaply or easily? Changing the transmission in order to run a particular wheel seems kind of drastic.

You could always move the speedo cable to the rear wheel using one of these.

It's a lot more fuss to change trans etc than to adapt a front wheel.

Thanks Texas and grbrown. That's why I'm asking. I've got a set of late model wheels but even if I don't change wheels I like the rear wheel speedo set up to get rid of the cable out front.
