Lost my left side saddlebag on the expressway this weekend. Just riding along and I heard the terrible sound of fiberglass and pavement. Looked back and there was my saddlebag sliding off into the barrier wall. Didn't have a place to stop for it that offered any safety nor am I even positive it would be salvageable. So this brings me to two questions:
1. What options are there for replacement saddlebags for the pre 93? It is not my battery side so I am sure I can get 93 and up style to fit, but that would leave me with two different latch styles.
2. Does anyone use any means to secure their bags better than those two clips? The front side of mine never hold up and clearly the back finally gave up on this one.
I have owned my 1990 bike from new and dumped those clips long ago, for nuts and bolts. I have the later bags and while they look similar are actually quite a bit bigger. I have both old and 'new' bags and haven't tried one of each, so I'm not sure if that would look odd.
I found one lower 85-92 bag on ebay for $75 so I went ahead and purchased that. Now to find a reasonably priced lid. I look at the threads for swapping to newer bags and it looks like it may take a little more than I feel like putting into it at the moment. Although that extra room sure would be nice.
I do think I will swap to a bolt and wing-nut combo for the few times I actually take the bags off. Maybe some type of leash for the lids as well?
I have never had problems with my lids, although I always lock them. You don't need wing-nuts for your bags. I used dome-headed allen screws with penny washers and proper locknuts, it only takes a few moments to remove them.
I have had one lid fly off as well, one of the latch bolts vibrated out or wasn't in there to begin with. That one I was able to retrieve but it scuffed it up a bit. I would rather have them and not need them than not have them and need them.

I put this kit on mine. Tamper proof bolts. Bags are very secure now as well. No theft worries, and no nuts to fiddle with. Just keep the wrench in the saddle bag tool kit if you carry one. Prolly a bit pricey, but worth it for me.
