Default Twin cam

Are there any major issues with the 99-06 twin cam touring models? If so is there any way to bulletproof the problem?

The biggest failure point I know of is the cam chain tensioners.
Switching it to a gear drive will nullify that issue.

Is that very expensive to do? I talked to my mechanic who is a Harley credited tech who works at the dealer here at home and he said tc have a 75% failure rate that's another reason I'm asking

If I remember right it costs about a grand.

Did you buy a TC or are you just thinking about it?

Like THC said the cam tension shoes (think that's right) were a big problem.

A good many have kept them serviced by changing them at around 35k best I remember.

Now a TC at the right price Ummm it could happen. Most of the folks I ride with are on TC's from 2002 to a couple of new one's.

This seems like an odd question for the EVO section but most here will help. A good many have TC's somewhere in the garage.

Plenty of TCs have gone 100,000 miles without problems. That being said, I updated my system shortly after buying it to the hydraulic system.

Stacks of stuff around HDF on the cam tensioner topic. There are several ways ahead, from simply replacing the shoes at appropriate intervals (bearing in mind replacement shoes are better than the original type that wore out), installing an SE or other brand conversion kit using an upgraded design, or going to gear drive (the most expensive solution). There are several aftermarket solutions to the last two.

The SE conversion is similar to the TC96 system and comes with an upgraded oil pump and is what I planned to use when I had a TC88. Mine never got to the point of needing any work. Bear in mind that this has been known about for many years now and it is quite likely that any TC88 has already been upgraded in some way.
