There are several ways ahead, from simply replacing the shoes at appropriate intervals (bearing in mind replacement shoes are better than the original type that wore out), installing an SE or other brand conversion kit using an upgraded design, or going to gear drive (the most expensive solution). There are several aftermarket solutions to the last two.
The SE conversion is similar to the TC96 system and comes with an upgraded oil pump and is what I planned to use when I had a TC88. Mine never got to the point of needing any work. Bear in mind that this has been known about for many years now and it is quite likely that any TC88 has already been upgraded in some way.
