Ebay would be first, Craigslist, and then general search engine searches. Assuming HD here, but using the part number will also help sometimes.

The parts finder diagrams here... http://www.granitestateharleystore.c...partfinder.htm is as good a place to start as any. They have drawings/part numbers going back to 1941. Once you have the part number it should get easier.

Good luck in the hunt.

There's no single one stop shop. Depends entirely what you want. If you have specific parts then we may be able to help with suggestions. Some older dealers may still have stock, some components are still used on much more recent bikes and may be available from any dealer.

You've got the all gritty by now, which is all absolutely correct, but there are a couple of other thing to know.

By now all the Evolution bikes are (long) officially obsolete and H-D has sold off any parts stock it had to Vintage Parts, Inc. This is an independent company who specializes in buying and reselling just such parts of many such brands.

VPI don't deal directly with the public but their stock is searchable, at least via helpful official dealers, and they may hold some of the more obscure and particular items. If you get stuck, it might be useful to know this to ask. Ditto, dealers can also do nationwide, indeed worldwide searches, to find who has parts.

VPI have bought the stock for cents on the dollar and are free to set their own prices. I don't have much direct experience of their pricing policies but I got the impression they were reasonable whereas some others, say speculating in FXR parts, were not. But, for the most part, older tourers are just considered old junk with no cult following (no offence intended), so parts are still very cheap and plentiful.

There are also some vintage part specialist, far and wide, and if you are looking for boxed or bagged, NOS items, old Evo is starting to slip into that category, e.g. https://www.jwboon.com.

There are various "search all" search engines for scanning Craigslist nationwide such as http://www.searchcraigslist.org. And sometimes it's worth thinking laterally and exploring other less walked paths ... but I'll let you find them on your own.

I actually prefer Worldofpowersports.com parts fiche as it is more stripped down and free from ads. You can print out your own parts books from its pages, although an official parts book should probably be on your shopping list. Sometimes you have to cross reference with dealers websites, as above, for model fitment and fastener sizes though.

Hope that helps.

What is it you have and what is it you are doing with it?

While this is partly true it isn't completely true.
Some parts have been sent to Vintage parts but many are still available at the dealership.

Absolutely right. And there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to which are still available and what isn't, so always check.

Oh, and far as shopping jwboon.com, they are in the Netherlands, so shipping to Odessa probably won't be cheap. It's been my experience that most everything they have is available for less in the US anyway.

It's true that some dealers have old stock and H-D still supplies some items. I'll accept that and agree that the selection is irrational ... but I've been hitting the wall of non-availability more and more. It's also a reminder that they are not making the stuff any more.

Same applies to early Twinkie stuff. I don't know what their cut off age is but I suspect it's becoming shorter what with the multidude of models these days. I thought CA had some kind of 25 year rule as far as supporting old models?

I've just found that not all "parts persons", or whatever the politically correct term is, either know to look or can be bothered to look; and so sometimes need prodded to do so, especially the inter-dealership search.

Living in the UK I've used Boon, who last time I looked won't ship to the USA. I buy most of my secondhand stuff in the USA, courtesy Ebay.

I'm trying to hunt down the radio caddy that goes in the fairing and possibly a new fairing if I can't find some one that wants to fix fiberglass
