That loose tank lining will cause some hard to diagnose headaches down the road (intermittently blocking flow to the fuel vale) Best to get as much out now as you can.

10-4. Im going to try and get anything i can out now. Im going to start drilling out the tank after work this evening.
I wrapped my tank in a big towel and taped it off to keep the metal shavings from the drill scratching the hell out of it. Go slow and be careful of the threads in the tank!
Yeah i really considered water but my buddy was so adamently opposed to filling it with water that i decided against it. But if yall think it will be ok i will feel much safer having done it
Your buddy is rite to be careful. Don't use just water in any other style gas tanks......it's just flat dangerous and will kill u. On these the opening is so big that a good rinse and fill to top pushes all the fumes out. U will be safe. To be honest with all the streetrods I build.....if I have to modify a tank I buy a new one.......I will not weld or cut on a used tank I can't clearly clean out.
On the crap thats in the tank. Toss some 1/4 nuts in the tank after your done and shake the crap out of it a few times.....it won't dent tank but will knock the loose stuff off. Also a good fuel filter before carb. Be careful of fuel sender taking it apart as that u will reuse. Take your time with the tank and even drop a small flashlight inside ....be careful not to cut into tunnel of tank were backbone runs near tank......good luck
I use brass sash or lamp chain from the hardware store to clean the inside of tanks. Non-sparking and MUCH easier to fish back out of the tank when you're done.
