Question Adding a USB power portI

I picked up a power port that takes a USB type cable so I can plug in or charge a phone or whatever. It's a device that fits in a dash. So I plan to make a hole in the inner fairing of my '91 FLHTC. Should be a nice addition. The ground is easy enough, but I am wondering where a good spot would be to tie in the hot side. I don't want it to be hot all the time, just when the bike is running. Any suggestions?

Thanks, that makes sense. I know mechanics but wiring always makes me a bit nervous. Would be just my luck to cross something and end up with burnt toast. I will definitely be getting some pics out once I get everything back together. Garage isn't heated and it's only 2 degrees out there. Hibernation time.

Looks like the 89 & 90 Ultra Classics had a cigarette lighter that was connected to a Orange (power) & a black (ground) wire form connector #16A. I'm not sure if your 91 Classic had the same harness but it might be worth a look. It should be a switched power source (off with key off). Any lead to your dash/headlight (low Beam) would also work. I would not connect to the lights if you are going to use a cigarette element in the socket as that may draw too much power and blow a fuse for the lights ... not good when riding in the dark.

I just use a usb adaptor in the lighter to charge my phone and power the GPS.

I put a power port tucked in, velcro'ed behind the seat for the wife to use.
powered it off the board in the left side panel, that used to power the CB

Battery tender make a plug with a usb port that plugs into your tender pigtail if that is an option. Stops you from having to drill a hole.

This sounds like a good idea. I will poke around and see what I can find. I already have the outer fairing off as I was trying to get the radio to work (PO had it all disconnected, found the fuses blown), it shouldn't be too hard to trace.

I'd try one of the Orange wires. That's the Accessory circuit. Tap into that. If you're messing with the radio anyway, there's two power lines to it, one switched and one on all the time. I'm pretty sure they are orange and red, respectively, but there might be a yellow in there too.

I have a dual USB that plugs into the lighter socket. Works great. Also seen a single that was very compact and also is flush with the socket. Seems like your making more work than you need to ....
