I'm sure thumb screws do help with the back pressure, I've never tried them so I won't put them down. People put down the cones but they work AND keep the gases getting back to the exhaust valve to a minimum like there designed to do
It's not back pressure that is the issue. It's the reversion.
And for sure the cones work. I noticed no difference going back and forth, both are great.

I drop it at about 5800 and shift at 7... through cutouts....
I never let off the throttle. When the hand went up I'd nail it, then I only let off at the finish line. Not when shifting. I power shifted.
I beat some pretty nice cars on a bike back then. Lol. Hopped up cars in the 70's man, on a bike. They ran good back then man.

Exhaust can flow backwards they say in straights killing the performance.
The exhaust gases themselves do not get reflected back up the pipe. They escape out the end of the pipe. It is the shockwave that travels ahead of the pulse of hot gas that runs into a wall of cold air at the end of the pipe, which causes the hot gas to slow and expand. The shockwave starts another wave (the one you hear) by hitting the "wall" and at the same time is reflected back up the pipe. It can either help you or hurt you, depending on how the pipe is tuned.

After two aluminum rear ends and three aluminum transmissions I stopped power shifting a Corvette.
