That's why I said if they want it they'll take it no matter what. I rarely see older bikes around here. All glides and fancy baggers. If someone stole mine I'd just sit there and wait for them to bring it back because it clearly would have been a mistake!

I have never had a problem with anything being stolen....If it ever happens, (it won't) I have insurance.

With the FXR, since it needed the key in it, I left the key in it.

With the EG, don't even need the key. Nice.

The only thing I worry about is forgetting/losing the key, pulling up on fumes to a gas station, and realizing I can't open the filler door.

As a habit, my fatboy allways rests with 2 disklocks and a steeringhead lock. When possible a steel cable goes around a lanternpost or any other fixed object. Most of the time I even take a sparkplugwire off.

That way, a possible thief wont be able to lift it into a van or start the bike and drive off.

But the best measure to take is having some good luck...

Here's what I've been running on mine for about 8 years or so. Slightly different version, but you get the idea.

That looks like a slick setup, right there. But it says "92+". Wonder if anyone makes one that will fit my '90.

You can open the filler doors with anything...it is not a real lock.

Take the lock out and turn it backwards. It won't latch and they really don't bounce around much.

My old fuel filler door wouldn't latch fully and used to rattle enough to drive me nuts. I got a replacement door with the push-button release. It was supposedly not made to fit my '89, but I was able to make it fit. Hasn't rattled since and I don't have to be digging for my keys when I pull up to the pump.

Pretty sure my filler lock is a real lock. Won't open without the right key.

On the Sporty, which has a padlock lock for the forks, that gets locked whenever Dr.L gets off the bike and both of us are away from the bike. My bike gets the fork lock put on whenever I get off. In both cases, even if we are just in the gas station a minute, the bikes are locked. When we park at night, I put a cable between the frames. Medeco padlock on the cable. Abloy padlock for the Sporty neck (Dr.L likes the chrome of the Abloy.)

It's the old bear joke: You don't have to out run the bear, just out run the next guy. So, if your bike is harder to steal than the next one over, that one will get hit.

That's very true, for those of us with 'proper' early baggers. When the MoCo swapped over to the drum-shaped key, they dropped all pretence of security, as any key will fit the fuel door lock. I learned that when quizzing my local dealer, after I had bought my 6 gallon tank and console. He simply sold me a pair of keys plucked at random out of a box from under the counter - they'll fit guv. And they do!
