Lay bike on its side. Don't wash or wax. An ugly bike is a safe bike. Kill switch.
I would turn the fuel off, but I would forget to turn it on and stall myself.
A sign saying This 1997 Bike is So Old Its Not Worth Stealing.
I never leave helmet with bike - thieves should bring their own.
I just try to deter the casual opportunist thief. The pro will get through anything. For short stops, I just turn ignition switch and kill switch off and leave bike in gear. For longer stops, I put a pad lock on the fork lock.
I have a cable lock I use to run through the sleeve of my jacket and lock it to the bike. I lock the helmet to the lock on the crash bars.
I have never spent the night anyplace with my bike. I am wondering if I should take any additional measures. I am planning to ride from Orlando, FL to Tuscaloosa, AL. Could be done in a day, but I am new to traveling on a bike so I plan to break it into tow days. I plan not to make a reservation and just stop wherever I am when I get tired. But I wonder if I should scope out crime areas along the way and try to pick a lower crime area to spend the night. Perhaps a bit off the beaten path?
But either way, I will not stress. Stressing kind of defeats the purpose of the adventure.
