I bought some cheap magnet things that are supposed to hold the lifters up in the blocks while you slide the cam in an out. they were like $15 bucks on ebay.
- Remove the pushrod covers and pushrods
- Get some 3" pieces of welding rod and put a "U" in the last 1/2" of one end.
- Then stick the straight end into the oil hole in the tappet and hold it at an angle (you will find that once you have a light sideways pressure on the welding rod you can actually lift and lower the tappet in its tappet block)
- Raise the lifter to as high as it will go and then loop a rubber band around the "U" you bent in and tie the other end off somewhere on the bike to keep the sideways pressure on the lifter.
- Do this to all 4 tappets and your good to go! (NOTE that from time to time a rubber band will ping off and the lifter will drop onto the cam chest - just install the lifter back into its slot and tie off again with a rubber band.
Extra trick if you want to remove the cam cover without touching ANYTHING else....with the ignition cover off (but the cam case cover still on) rotate the engine until the timing slot is at the 5 o'clock position. This is where there is minimal to no loading on the cam and basically once you unbolt the cover you can remove it with the cam staying in place!
I took a paper clip and straightened it out, bent it back to a V then stuck each end in the oil holes. I pulled them up by keeping pressure on it then stuck a fat sharpie in the V while I got the cam back in.
