Default Trunk Support

I stop because I hear a rubbing squeaking noise and I see my touring trunk flopping back and forth. I bungie it down and head home.

After I take off the trunk, it became clear that the chrome support seem broke, both sides, right at the bolt down area.

Has anyone else experienced that?

1997 Ultra Classic. Has the CB unit under the tour pack.

I had it welded but, not sure I trust that.

Looking for a part number or maybe a member of the forum that may removed their touring pack and no longer uses that support.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Wayne

If he slugged the tube, it should be fine, but it looks like he just butt welded it. I wouldn't trust that.

He told me he couldn't because the threaded plug stuck down the tube to far and the threaded plug is aluminum.

He is a real talent but, he had concerns as well.

Stainless steal tig weld. ??

Looks like a replacement would be wise. Hopefully not too difficult to find.

Sacrifice the plug, slug the joint, make sure he drills several holes on each side to get a good weld between the bracket and the slug. From there, re-drill the mounting hole a bit oversized, mount the box using a bolt long enough to reach through the bracket and a nut on the other side.

Just went through this last year on my 97 ultra...the bolt plug is the problem with the setup. Found lots of threads on this and other forums with this same problem. ..always breaks at the bolt plug. If you still have the cb you will need to probably do as suggested and remove plugs reweld and just use through bolts like 98 and newer models do...I had already removed my cb so I picked up a take off braket from a 2007 in the classifieds for 30 bucks and bought some longer bolts.

I have done some more research and found those threads and others. Yes those bolt holes are the weak link.

I am going to do what Omaha suggested.

Thanks

Wayne
