Default Another ticking evo

Hey I have 98 low rider, stock, with 40k miles which has developed a tick but more of a tap that is lowest somewhere in front cylinder/ rocker cover area on right side. It gets louder as engine warms up, is loudest around 2000rpms, but motor still runs good. Should I start by tearing down the rocker box on front and look for signs of trouble??

Thanks for the advice.

40K is about time for new lifters. OEM's are still a good choice as well as S&S. never used anything else.. The rockers at the valve stem wear a little as well. I replaced mine with new shafts at 41K. Check your tolerances shaft to rocker. I actually had worn shafts. And if you want to make them real quiet get adjustable pushrods and set the preload to .140".

Usually when someone comes on the forum with a stock 40K bike, the next thing you know you got talked into a cam, pipes, a/c . you know what I'm saying..... good luck man...

You might as well install a cam, pipes and free flowing air cleaner

So should lifters be replaced every 40k?

IDK. I got 23 years and 58,000 miles out of the original set in my 93. They still looked good when removed.

My EVO has it's share of valve train noise. Swapping out the lifters this past winter hasn't removed any of it. Rather, it's smoothed the sound out to a constant note.

Like has been posted many times before: If it sounds like a pissed off sewing maching, it's running fine.

EDIT: Oh, yeah: Throw a new cam and cam bearing in it. MAW upgrade the exhaust, air cleaner, and ignition module too....

Differing opinions on this. I had the needles in the front exhaust tappet roller fail at 49,000 miles. It ended up costing me my first motor. Imagine a whole lot of little pieces of hardened 6150 tool steel deciding to take the scenic tour of your motor. Some people get lucky. I wasn't.

A "loose" tappet roller won't "tick", it will sound like a "knock" coming from the gearcase and may be intermittent at first. Unfortunately, by the time you hear it, the damage is done.
