Okay E-man ....this is what I just did, you said the linkage pic was pushing down to find first, so,I pushed mine down while looking at it and the angle looks different from your pic, Sooooooo... I posted a pic of linkage piece I have extra and traced it on paper and flipped it over, lined up the square in it,traced it again to show how much the angle differs if it was to be installed backwards for some reason.
Of course that would mean the linkage rod adjustment is off also, or it simply would not fit that way.
Maybe this is a possibility. Also, the ONLY time I may need to hit first more than once is if I was holding the clutch in for a long time before kicking into first, then I would let out clutch slightly pull clutch hit first, goes right in.

Hope this can be helpful...

Thanks glidein . I should have mentioned that the linkage is disconnected from the front foot shift lever and just laying there creating a wired looking angle but the part bolted to the tranny is how it seems in the picture. That picture was just a picture I took when I was doing the stator and top end but I zoomed in on it for this topic. If you would please look and see where that tit/**** is positioned when it is in neutral and then where it is when you push it down into first. The **** on mine bottoms out or runs out of room to slide before it catches first gear.

I've obviously led a sheltered life! I hired an early '80s FLHT for ten days, but don't recall anything special about riding it. Had a great time riding around on it at Daytona!

Excuse my artwork this time but I think you get the jist of it, it gets a little closer to the middle in first. This is approx,I can't get a good real pic of it.

I'm having trouble posting the picture...

I remember when the nickname for these transmission top covers was the "cow pie".

Yes,I pushed shifter down into first by hand watching the pin travel in the slot. It may even be a little closer to the middle of the slot than drawn, but no way close to bottom out on either side of slot. Pin is only close when resting freely...

Thanks glidein. I thought at first maybe it was a combination of slack in different areas on the linkage but there is really not that much and after messing with it on the bench I think it's inside. My eyes are untrained as what to look for even though I have messed with it for hours. I got it loaded up in the truck and am gonna take it to the shop this morning and let Jon over in Denton look at it.
