Strange leak!

Default Strange leak!

Crap...

After a ride a small puddle of oil will form underneath the primary cover when I park the bike on it's sidestand.

It's seems as though it's dripping from the drainplug (as that's the lowest point) but the drainplug itself it not the source of the leak.

Now when I park the bike UPRIGHT, it doesn't leak AT ALL?!

Now the oil is engine-oil BUT I have that in the engine as well as the primary...so still doesn't mean much.

I can seem to find any leaks coming from the engine, the oillines or tank, so I'm thinking that for some reason the primary cover is leaking....?

I've used a new gasket but that's a steel one, not the much thicker fibre/sillicone version...could that be the problem?

Or is there something else amiss....?

Tips and hints greatly appreciated because it's doing my nut in...!

Leak on sidestand + leak when not on sidestand suggests it is coming from the derby cover.

(and that your primary is too full...)

But there's no dribble coming from the derbycover...was the first I checked as well...and I chucked a quart in there...so if it's too full now it'll leak away nicely untill at the right level ;-)

Check your inner primary seal where the tranny meets up to the primary. If that seal leaks it will run down and drip by where the drain plug is.

Mine will only leak after it gets good and warm and I park it. So I just live with it until the next time the inner primary is off.

My inner leaked like that I thought it was the cover. The only thing that made me keep looking was it sprayed over the back of the bike. Can you look inside where your belt goes on at the top with a flashlight and maybe a small mirror and see if you can see oil splatter in there?

But that doesn't make sense really?

The seal is higher than the oillevel, so how could it leak from there when put on the stand?

I did replace that seal though the other day: the 'open' side towards the primary and the 'closed' side towards the transmission.

This was the way the old one was fitted and the only way it really made sense to me BUT I'm sort of doubting now, as it said 'oilside' on the closed side...which didn't make sense...

Are you certain it's primary oil and not transmission oil? The seal on the output shaft of the transmission, or a shift rail seal may be leaking.

De-grease the bike.
Dust suspect motor area with talc powder.
Look for oil trace.
From limited information..Guess shift shaft seal

As long as you are using gear oil in the trans it is easy to eliminate the shaft seal as the culprit.

My buddy had the same problem turns out it was some old failed silicone come from the mid controls bolt hole.
