Took Hackd advice trimmed rubber plug back a bit was able to get ahold of the contacts and clean them up a bit. They are pretty rough looking. The rubber boot is starting to rot but did get it to keep charging. I ordered a spring clip holder maybe that will help also. With the condition of the contacts I'll have to do something better in the future.

But definitely going to open primary and pull clutch/chain/comp to get at the plug do it right and take my time. I picked up 12 ga oil resistant wire, adhesive lined heat shrink, right stuff gasket maker/sealer, silicone sealant, and water proof connectors.YD
Totally agree. Pull Primary and all that needs removing to get into and behind Stator. Have a close look at the small retaining clip which is attached to the crankcase by 2 screws. This clip & screws prevent the Stator wires from "rubbing" against the Stator edge. Make sure the 2 screws are seated properly.Renew the srews if necessary.
This setup is similar to that found on a domestic "plug" in as much as it prevents the cable being stretched as it enters the "plug" body.

The rubber starts to deteriorate over time. Nature of the beast. If you lightly squeezed the female contacts to tighten them up on the male ones, you should be fine as long as you felt a positive 'snap' when you plugged the regulator in.

The rubber also goes to crap when the contacts arc.

A few years back I was idling in the garage, seen smoke from front of bike. It was the plug, disconnected it and it was melted on the inside(male) ,there was no fixing this, that needs to be a tight connection or it will heat up . MY plug was tight but terminal inside not...

Sometimes with the long oil filters like on my 98 superglide when changing the filter I am real carefull not to disturb it. I use aspecial tool and undo the filter with out toucing the plug. The oilfilter wrench hits it an d cause the loose conn.

Well I got lazy and did the oil drain plug O-ring and popsicle stick trick to the stator plug and it seems to have stopped the weeping of oil for now...That is my last shot. Hopefully it will hold till the winter when I'm going to pull it all apart to do a drive belt change and will do the plug "fix" then. YD
