FWIW, I always give a couple of full twists of the throttle to juice up the carb before a cold start. Should have mentioned that earlier.

My '90 FLHTC always fires right up.

Ok I'll have to see if mine has a throttle lock.

If it has a stock throttle the lock is a thumbscrew on the underside between the cables.

No throttle lock on mine.
Just like GRBrown mentioned above...
I do the same routine as I did with my Shovelhead...
I'll choke it...start it....sometimes I'll let it warm up for a minute, maybe 2 if it's cold (winter) or we're still packing the bags or finishing a smoke....kill the choke...and gently take off.

I don't get on her until she's warmed up...but putting down the road (the road I live on is 35mph on my end, 45 mph on the other end ..and I have about 2.5 miles til it intersects the next road)...and that little ride is the rest of the warm up period.

Once I'm beyond my road, she's warmed up enough to get on her more if I want to.

Once in a blue moon I've let her (or the Shovel) warm up too long on the choke..and heading down the road she'll bark and whine about the plugs....that's what RPMs are for, a good little blast past 4k...(cuz she's warmed up if I let her idle too long)...and they're clear. No problem!

My Evo takes 3 twists of the throttle, full choke and it will fire right up. I leave the choke on until the rpm's start to climb and then start weening it off the choke trying to keep the idle at 1k rpm. It only takes a minute or two. It's a '97 and that's the way it has always been since I bought it in '99. Never any issues with plugs

Cold starts on my bike depend on the ambient temperature. Above 55F, just full choke (actually an "enrichener" circuit on a Mikuni), and hit the button. Below 55F, a couple of priming shots are needed to start the motor. I let it run on full choke for a half minute or so until the idle settles smoothly into the "fast" idle. Then I close the choke partway to regulate the idle speed and let it warm up until I feel a bit of warmth in the heads (about another minute). I then lower the idle a bit with the choke and take off. Since I live on a back street in a village, I'll ride slow until I get to the edge of town. By then, the bike is warmed up enough to ride normally. I'll shut the choke off completely after about two miles.

If it's a stock motor a minute or two. If it's built (high comp) a little longer wouldn't hurt...

For me, 2 wicks of the throttle, pull the choke 1/2 out and hit the starter. As soon as it starts I push in the choke all the way. I let it idle at about 1200 rpm for a minute or so. I always start out with a slow ride around the block and don't " get on it" till I feel some warmth in the rocker boxes. There's a lot of aluminum in a Evo and it needs time to expand.
