Default leaking tranny fluid

so yesterday i'm out whipping around town.... park for something to drink and eat, and when i come out there's a three inch sized puddle of tranny fluid under my primary

it's not primary fluid, as i use Type-F because of the clutch i have... it was indeed tranny fluid.... so i pull everything apart when i get home, and i find it's leaking from here...

any thoughts on what's going on and what's involved with a job like this?

That is the seal that goes into the main drive gear, it seals the space between the main drive gear and the mainshaft (which passes through the main drive gear). You can remove it by drilling a small hole in the seal, and thread a wood screw into it, then pull it out.

What year is the bike? The pulley looks like an old outdated configuration, if you replace it, use `95 model year or later parts (pulley, spacer, oil seal, lockplate and lockplate bolts.

If it were my bike, I would replace them while the inner primary cover is off.

Check the shifter shaft on the transmission while you are there, make sure it is tight on the shaft.

Here`s a pic of the main drive gear and the seal:

hi Dan,

it's a 91, so yes, it has the older setup... so it's okay to use the later versions?... i think they changed in 92 to the 'lockplate' type setup

and yes, well certainly check the shifter shaft seal while i'm there... i mean, it's not leaking... but will give it a closer inspection

any idea what causes this main drive gear seal to leak?....i'm guessing just wear and tear?

Having had the pleasure of my drive pulley loosening up (twice-it's been a while).... The MoCo upgraded the unit in 1994. When the pulley loosens up (it doesn't take much), it will make contact with the inner primary. Gawd awful sound... The upgraded part should retro-fit back to your 91. I was lucky to be within limping distance of a dealer that happened to be open on Saturday, happened to have the part, and also had a mechanic working. Otherwise I would have been sitting for the weekend.

Over the past winter I had the Jims lock plate installed (shift shaft seals were leaking). Much better overall design.

I get a funny clunk, clunk, clunk sound from my bike that sounds like it's coming from around the main drive gear at the tranny. I only notice it when the bike is hot, not when cold. Sometimes you can hear it when pushing the bike into the garage or when rolling very slowly to a stop. It's not an engine noise as it will do it without the motor running. I've got an on again/off again leak from behind the primary just like the OP mentioned too. I wonder if the main drive gear nut is a little loose or it's maybe something else?

Most likely the drive pulley is loose. If you've got and on again, off again leak that you thing is a primary gasket, but isn't: Check to see if it's transmission lube.

The symptoms you describe are exactly what was going on with my 93. As I posted, it happened to me twice. Once outside of Chambersburg, PA, where it hit the inner primary and sounded/felt like the bike was 'missing'. In addition to a lough squeal. The second time, I noticed the tell-tale quarter sized spot of fluid on the pavement, was in Daytona, FL. I took the bike in the next day to have it repaired. That was in 2002, and I haven't had an issue with it since then. However, last fall, I did have a shift shaft seal start to leak, and when that was being addressed over the winter, I had the Jims lock nut installed.

Maybe you should start your own thread, so we can answer the OP`s questions without confusion.
