Default Transmission fluid leek, advice needed

1996 fatboy

This morning I noticed what I presume to be transmission fluid leaking from the left bottom side. Specifically where one of the bolt is.

Have a look at the picture

So my question is;

Should I replace gasket? No idea when it was done last

Or Should I give the bolt a small quarter turn?

This bike shakes like crazy so is it possible it got loose a bit?

Well, that one, potentially loose bolt isn't going to cause your bike to 'shake like crazy'.

I would try replacing the gasket first and see if that stops your leak. If not, further digging will need to be done. It may be a bad quad seal or inner primary seal.

No I meant maybe the bolt got a bit loose from the bike shaking

So you don't recommend giving that bolt a quarter turn to tighten up a bit ?

First, check under the bike and behind the inner primary to see if it's really leaking at the primary bolt, primary drain plug, or from a seal. That is the lowest point where leaks end up. How many miles?

From where you're pointing:

If it's one of the outer primary case bolts, then you can tighten it only if it's loose. They are about 7-9ft lbs. You're not pointing at the primary drain plug right?

It's real important to figure out which type of fluid is leaking. And I'd also investigate the vibration too. Should not be to the point you call "crazy," because something is not right. Check motor mounts.

snug everything up and give it a good washing. then spray some powder deorderant around where you think it's leaking. go for a spin and you should be able totell where it's coming from. good luck.

first, you need to determine if it's in fact tranny fluid or primary fluid that is leaking

second, you need to find the source from where it's leaking... leaks travel due to riding, and the drip where it's at could simply be the result of 'splashing'

Okay tomorrow morning I will clean up the bottom and run the bike to see exactly where the leak is coming from and than take it from there.

What you are pointing to is the primary not the tranny, however tranny fluid leaking will eventually make it's way to drip from there but it will be dripping from further underneath also. Crazy vibration could be a worn bushing or bearing in your tranny also causing a leak( I'm rebuilding mine now). A small mirror is very helpful looking for these types of leaks, so clean and look after short ride.
Generally the primary and tranny fluid are not the same type.....

Sorry, I misunderstood what you were trying to say.... Yes, I would tighten it up a bit if it came loose. Just make sure you don't over tighten and snap it off.

Like other's have posted: Determine if it's primary or transmission lube.

I doubt if it's primary. Most likely, it's leaking from a transmission seal. Either a shift rail seal or the main output seal. Mine had the same leak (three times in 23 years). First time I thought it was the primary cover. Swapped out the gasket, tightened the drain plug (added teflon pipe dope to the threads), and it would still leak. A few months later, I heard 'The Noise' (1995-Chambersburg, PA.) Drive pulley hit the inner primary because the bolts had loosened on the lock plate. Limped to nearest dealer and had it fixed. Second time I noticed the small oil stain under the bike (2002-Daytona, FL) I took it to the dealer in Kissimmee, FL and had it fixed. At both dealerships, it was billed out as 3.5 hours labor. Third time (2015-Detroit, MI), it was a shift rail seal that was leaking. I had my local indy put on the JIMs locking nut, just because he was already 'in there'.

Unfortunately, true to MoCo form, you have to take off a bunch of perfectly good/functioning/dry parts to get to the one that's leaking. Necessitating the purchase of a lot of gaskets, etc. that weren't causing the problem. The biggest beotch is having to take off the inner primary, because the compensator nut is uber tight.
