Meantime, just ride.
The old speedo just spins in circles and the mileage doesn't display anymore. the most i get is the trip meter reading .1

Checked two local indy who gave me numbers to try. 3 harley dealers that said they couldn't do anything. the speedometer is a new-old stock replacement part. It was sitting on my friends shelf for years. In the original box unopened.

There was no black. Im familiar with this problem though. The old speedometer would just jump around and read between 60-120 mph.

The unit went bad. No black screen.

Thank you for all the replies! The unit is brand new made in 1996. Its a really small problem.. but I kind of want the miles back on cause it was my dads.

To be clear.
The old unit would jump, inconsistent MPH reading correct?
Meaning the needle would swing from left to right but give an incorrect speed correct?
It did not actually spin in a circle 360 degree's like a fan correct?
The odometer is not recording miles correct?
Just want to make sure you have reviewed the speed sensor.
The speed sensor will build-up metal shavings some times.
The inability to maintain a consistent reading would cause the needle to fluctuate between speeds and the odometer would be unable to record miles traveled.
That speedometer has about 12 wires and is a bit of pain to change-out.
Just want to make sure you have full information and do not end up frustrated due to a speed sensor issue.

If you do decide to change the unit then you may wish to consider using some Posi-Locks to make clean splices.

My speedometer hasn't read the correct mileage since I rolled it over from "99,999,9" to "00,000.0" back in '03.

That is a beautiful thing!

Not trying to sell it. It was my dads bike. It had really low mileage because the guy that bought it had major back surgeries and could no longer ride it. Held on to it with hopes he would be able to ride it again. Bought it with 11,500 miles on it.

Just for fun I called HD customer service and they said they don't calibrate speedos.

Takes a while to get through all the press 1 for this and 2 for that but I finally got hold of a live body and that's what I was told.
