Prot, Tom84FXST, Cobra1, MisfitJason, Beemervet (scary sense of humor), Hackd, texashillcountry, UncleG, langwilliams, Tony N, Hey Man, .....thank you all for your insights and help. Adjusted the mixture screw a couple of times until I was satisfied with no burping, belching, farting or smoking from pipes. Took the bike up on I-10 and opened the mother up. No problem hitting 85 and still had some throttle left. I had forgotten just how fast 85 mph feels on a bike. Not sure I'll rejet, don't see a big benefit to the way I want to ride. Did notice that I lost about 4 miles per gallon with the adjustment but I can live with the difference. Thanks again, Sand850
glad it helped....4 mpg sounds a little high but if you're getting around 40 I'd say you're good. a 2 into 1 exhaust will help with performance too. Check the date on those tires if you're going to be runnin those speeds a lot!

^^^^ Everything he said...
If you're in the 38-40 mpg I would consider that 'average'. That's what my mildly modded FLHS gets on average. 40-45 on the interstate at a steady 70 mph. IIRC the softails are geared different than the Eglides?
Yeah, second the tires. Stock Dunlops have enough handling quirks when new....

Final drive ratios on Softies and Touring are the same, I believe. The ratio went from 3.36 pre 94 to 3.15 94 and later. (Change was in the primary, BTW) I'm doing this by memory, so if the ratios aren't exact, I know they are close.
Was getting close to 40 mpg prior to changing mixture. Now I'm getting right at 36 mpg. The 36 mpg reflects a mix of highway and street driving. Wanted the upper speed capability on the highway so I could get my butt out of the way if needed. 70 to 75 mph is fast enough for me. Have learned to display my testosterone level in ways that don't always require a wide open throttle. As for the tires, they are new. Pirelli Night Dragons. Don't know if they are good or crap but they still have plenty of tread.

That's about what I get.
I run anywhere from 34 - 39 mpg depending on how hard I ride.
