I think my Twin Cam manual says to crack the enricher a bit after a bit of off time even when still warm so it's not that crazy. If you have a musical ear, you can listen to some of the vids on youtube with an idling bike at the prescribed rpm and then tune to pitch. There are apps you can use to record audio and use a graphical display such as in the program Audacity to figure out rpm with a little math. Or you can buy one of those cheap $10 tach/hour meters on Amazon.
I use the latter option and it works great. I don't care about "lope" or a "fashionable" idle - i care about proper oil to the engine and I set to my prescribed 1000 rpm after a full warmup.
You could get a mini gauge and a bracket that mounts to the rocker box cover. just get one compatible to your bike and follow the instructions. If it's not EFI the coil, if it is the control box might have a TACH port.
My bike has always been like that to some degree. If I shut it off for say a half hour or an hour, she'll fire right up with no enrichener, but will die if I let it idle. There seems to be a "zone" where the bike will start without the enrichener, but doesn't quite want to "run" without a bit of it.
If you don't want to install anything, then pick up a tach on fleabay for a two cylinder motorcycle, attach a length of wire with alligator clips or crimp-on connectors and use the tach as a handheld tool...Yes the tach will not be the most accurate, but it will get you close.
Lots of instructions on google on how to wire it up. YD
