Before my pinion gear broke I would hear the pinion gear hit the ring gear with a loud clunk every once in awhile.
I never did figure out a pattern to it.
Did yours ever do that?
FWIW I'm running a stock starter on mine.
I tried an All ***** but it was just too noisy for me.
The whine just seemed to come at once - noticeable and then I continued to use it a couple times and it got "whinier." When it took approximately six times to start, I knew there was a problem.
I went with the All ***** heavy duty starter as I originally thought that might be the issue. Found out it was a charging system issue and installed a new Spyke 40A regulator.

Entire starter set was replaced in 2010, due to the same issue.
OEM or aftermarket Starter? Oh yea just saw Allballs. No too keen on allballs parts....And, is your motor built or stock. If built do you have comp releases? Cause that'll do it....
