Anybody know why HD used the smaller gas tanks on the springer models?
My springer has 4.2 gal tanks, seen another Evo softail but has much wider tanks. Just curious, thanks.
Good question. Just style, I suspect. Think of the tiny tank on the Sportster 72 model. There is some mysterious algorithm no doubt, by which the MoCo decide such things, model by model. If we mere mortals knew why, there would be nothing to talk about......

My 97 FX Springer also came with a 4.2 gal tank, Swapped them out with 5 gal tanks
It's history, man! The springer is supposed to harken back to the days of the Knucklehead and the Panhead. In that era the big twin had a smaller tank (around 3.5-4 gallons), so when Harley created the Heritage and Springer Softails, they gave them the smaller, vintage style tanks. The 5 gallon tanks first appeared in '65, on the first Electra Glide.
The Softail Custom and Special (FLSTN) were "custom" or "special" bikes, so they got the 5 gallon tanks. Of course, when Harley redesigned the Softail line in 2000, all Softails got the same size tanks.
