I found that a small 1/4 12 point box wrench works better than a socket for breaking the bolts loose.
Even Snap on or Mac sockets tend to slip.

You may need to use a .050 shim or less, this will be based on your measurement of actual end play. Also, you do have the gasket in place right?
thrust washer is in correctly. Yup. That's right. That's the difference in cam lengths. I'm gonna try and swing by a Indy or dealer today and pick up a .050 shim.

just read the instructions online....88-up need a .050 shim! At least I measured correctly!

Did you swap the gear from your old cam onto your new one?

No it came with one but with the cover on just snug it turns freely as soon as I tighten it all the way down it locks up

I swap the oil gear to a metal one do you still use that washer on the end with it

The breather should have come with new metal washers. When I put the wrong washer on my breather it did the same thing as yours and nothing would turn when torqued down.

hopefully the .050 shim will do the trick. Knew I remembered about the older cases being different in the cam chest, thanks for finding that.

There is a tolerance for the breather gear as well, lay a straight edge across the cam chest and put a feeler guage between the straight edge and the washer(shim). I can't remember the measurement tho and I'm at work, someone will chime in if I don't get it for you later.
