Change the lifters for sure. After market cams are shorter to be able to fit the early EVOs. You will need some sort of a shim washer. my 98 needed a 60 thousand thick one. The autozone puller works just fine and after you return it they reimburse you so its free. I used my old cam to install the bearing and it worked perfect.

I just installed the EV13 in my 1998 FLHTCU.
I used heartland tool. Justified purchase cuz I have 2 other EVOs
At 40k, I replaced lifters. I had one that wasn't perfect.
I mistakenly did not buying any shims and needed one, cuz EV13 is shorter than stock cam. The price of a shim kit, was negligible, compared to the price of one shim, so I bought the kit.
I also bought adjustable push rods. I figured this save me tons of time and would do so for future repairs.
I used binder clips to hold up lifters, but wished I had the magnets.
I also used the lifter alignment screws as it took the guess work out of equation and they are dirt cheap (I think heartland offers them).
I would also replace the cone gasket. A leaking cone gasket ($4) is what kicked off this $500 leaking gasket project! ;-)

Yeah, I think I've come around to the fact that I should, the more I've read on it.

So now I have new questions (of course) 'cause I'm getting beyond my scope of knowledge.

Thinking of going with Johnson Hylift lifters. For the Evo, they make:

$100 - OEM Stock replacement - B2303
$140 - .002 Oversized (Block Saver) - B2303-2
$120 - Slow Leak Down for the Highest Spring Pressures - B2303S

Is there a certain model that is the "right one", or is it just a matter of the higher priced ones are higher quality?

The EV27 has a .495 valve lift. My stock cam has a .472 valve lift. Does that matter in regard to what lifters I put in?

Change the lifters, you have the old configuration.

The "B" type lifters came out for the `98 model year.

Even if they were B lifters, a cam change at 32k would be a good time to replace.

Yeah, I didn't realize mine weren't the B lifters until I read up some more on it. Definitely gonna change 'em.

Just deciding which ones to change them with now.

Get the lifters, get the shims, get a pair of the block alignment tools and also get two identical cam chest gaskets, one for measuring the end play and the other for final assembly. Set the end play according to the Andrews instructions, not the FSM.
Be sure to install the new inner bearing at the same depth as the original, it doesn't go flush with the casting, it gets lubed from the groove at the top.

The Autozone puller works great, and as long as you don't break it, it's free. They loan it, you pay in full, and get back your money upon return.
I bought two shims from the indy that pressed my gear on, a 55 and a 60. I used the 55.

I have 1991 Springer softail what i bought new and drove 170000 km (about 105000 miles) before I decided that it´s time for EV27 cam and new cam bearing and lifters. I did not find any problem with the old liters or the bearing. I changed them anyhow and the travel continues. I personally don't bye these horror stories about failing lifters what you have to change 25000 miles.
