I know myself. I know if I hadn't gone with new lifters when I had the cam changed etc. I would have thought about it all the time. Every time the bike would make a different noise, I would have been driven to madness like the main character in The Tell Take Heart.

I think I have my original lifters in a box in my garage.

I went with Crane Cams Big Axle lifters.

Here is my parts list from a couple years ago. This worked great for me and how I ride. I am still thrilled with the results. The future mods if my bike will not involve anything with the engine because I am that happy with it.

Andrews EV-13 cam $119.95
Dynojet Thunderslide with Jet Kit 8708 $128.42
Crane Cams Time Saver Adjustable Push Rods 4-0030 $126.72
Dynatek 2000P DD2000-HD2EP ignition module $145
Crane Cams big axle lifters 3-2050. set of four for $189.95
Crane Cams cam bearing 7-0400 $15.51
Cometic Cam Gasket Service Kit C9624F $19.04
Cometic EST Top End Gasket Kit w/.030" Head $87.39
Screaming Eagle Air Cleaner Kit (Carbureted Evo) 295433-99B $127.96
New set of stock rings
Milled Heads .025"

I replaced mine at 67,750. One was dead, but caught in time. Did wipe out the cam lobe, though.

Just wanna say thanks for all the info here.

And...with all the reading I've been doing this weekend I think I'm last minute changing my order to an EV13 instead of the EV27. I'd been back and forth already, but for the kind of riding I do it may fit me better. I ride my bike like more a touring machine (actually adding hard bags this month too) and I'm no speed demon, so I think I'll feel the RPM range of the EV13 more than the 27.

I really like the EV 13 in my 97 EG. It carry's me and wife and a good amount of stuff just fine. I rode some bikes when looking fir an EVO and with friends. This one just seemed to run better than most and have gotten asked while at stops on rides " Ok What have you got done to that EVO to keep up that good?"

!997 EG Head work EV13 cam Tuning D&D 2-1 has made for a real sweet combo

Glad to hear it. The more I've read stuff like this, the more I realized the EV13 is probably the right call for me. Luckily that doesn't change anything else I already ordered.

Surly this forum can be overwhelming with the knowledge and opinions! Such a great place to find much needed information. I have learned to read, absorb and sit with the many different perspectives and conclude a decision. I am swapping my cam next week, I have the EV27 I picked up from a member last year. The bike ran so well I didn't want to give up ride time as I had just purchased the bike at the beginning of the season and had so much to do to get it physically how I wanted it (basically back to stock riding position).

So now with the severe cold I am in the proper time and space to get it on! I've been following the thread and of the mind, buying tools is never a bad thing, while there (in this situation) replace the parts easily accessible especially if they will need replacing eventually.

Good choices can be made with evaluation of all the experience and opinions. Mostly it is yours to do what you want...therefore it doesn't matter what anyone else would do. This gives you an opportunity to offer opinion based from your choices and experience for those that have questions in the future! Good Luck!!

An Evo combo we have built here for over 20 years now is this:
Our Stage II Evo Heads
Wiseco 10.0 cr pistons
S&S lifters
Wood 6 cam, or Andrews #3.
Dyna ignition
CV, Mik 42 or S&S E
Supertrapp, Thunder header or S/E or CS slip-ons.
These tune off between 82-85 hp, 90-93 ft/lbs on most honest dynos.
Have heard clients report back, with CV carbs, gas mileage as high as 54 mpg, on cross-country riding.
