Default Cam swap started today.

I am into swapping my softail cam (finally!) and want to know from the masses if just pulling the pin on the rockers and reassembling leads to leaks at the box and the head? I have what I need but seems unnecessary to go any further in tear down...

Should not create any leaks, definitely not with the heads, they are bolted separately with head bolts.

What exactly are you doing here?

What type pushrods are being used?

I wouldn't bother with the rockers. Just snap cut the pushrods replace the cam and lifters and use the S&S quickies... If your not building a race motor the Quickies will work just fine....

Basically what Dan says only it's lifter preload that is holding tension and you will need to be on the base of the cam when doing this...or hot rods response.

Yes, not valve spring tension....brain fade...hey, it`s an old brain...

I will remove that misinformation from my post.

As far as pushrods go...

I`m one of the minority here, I have no use for adjustable pushrods when the lifters are hydraulic. Just more reciprocating mass in the valve train.

I have had 2 adjustable pushrods come loose on me over the years, the first time there was no damage, but the second time it cost me a lifter, I was lucky both times...

I pulled the rocker box tops and the 2 bolts for the rocker shafts, slide out the shafts and pulled the push rods. I was originally going to pull the whole assembly but don't think ill go any further. I was going to do the adjustable rods but since this is a bolt in I was going to pull the entire rocker box assembly but think I won't need to. I am concerned with the rocker box to head leaking...

Personally I think you're gonna need to.

You're gonna have a hell of a time compressing the rocker arms to put the rocker shafts back in if you don't go ahead and loosen the bottom rocker box.

If you plan on staying with the stock shafts (my preference) then remove the lower rocker box install a new gasket and use the larger bolts to compress the lifters 1/4 turn at a time during reassembly.

Depending on which jug you are reassembling make sure the piston is at TDC.

I will most likely do it, I was asking to see if others had any luck. I replaced the front cylinder gasket mid summer... not like it is going to be any more hassle as I am already tore down. I have had a couple of twins but the evolution is new to me... so I'll ask along the way. I am out of time so I won't be back at it for a while... in the meantime I'll research and read all of the many threads. I started with "Kees" that was a good read..
