1998 FXSTS Ignition Switch
The barrel key that came with my springer won't lock the ignition switch. I'm not sure if the problem is the key or the lock, but if I decide to replace the switch am I ok to go with an aftermarket ($33) or should I stick with an OEM ($120)?
In other words, are the aftermarket switches dependable?

If you talk to Harley, they will tell to buy the MoCo replacement since it's mechanical and more reliable\durable. I went the cheap route through J&P and got the barrel key electronic switch. It's been reliable so far but time will tell. I bought this project bike without a set of keys, so at least now I can lock her up.

I bought 2 and both of them went out in about 6 months but I have a different designed switch than you do.
Depends on the switch, I suppose. I had an OEM switch fail when one of the contact "rivets" sheared off. I replaced it with an "electronic" switch from J&P cycle about 8 years ago and haven't had a problem since.
Then again, I use the same switch as Tex H.C.

FWIW I bought mine from Drag Specialties so maybe J&P sources better stuff.
If you do choose after market carry a 12 gauge jumper wire with male spade ends just incase. This way you can still get home....

Fortunately, when my OEM switch went, it was the "Accessory" position that broke, so I could still ride it.
