In the photo below, I feel like there should be a lead going from the battery (or the constant hot post of the solenoid) to the "input" side of the main circuit breaker (the same post that the output from the voltage regulator connects to).
Have you looked at what was on your bike instead of what was on paper?
Does the actual wiring match the diagram or is there a wire connecting the starter and main breaker?
I looked at all the wiring diagrams in this manual and the only diagram that doesn't show a 'buss bar' from the battery to the main circuit breaker is the diagram for the 1984 FXST. I guess it could be a mistake that it was omitted in the diagram. I included a diagram from another model just for illustration purposes.
The 84 FXST didn't use the "buss bar"...the main breaker was right beside the battery in a "clip"...with a wire run right to it.
Since it didn't use the buss bar...some "Einstein" took white-out to the schematic...not thinking about how they changed the circuit.

The schematic is correct. the Positive goes to the starter solenoid the start relay switches ground to activate the starter solenoid.
I disagree.
Even if the bike was somehow wired up to activate the starter solenoid and the starter motor by having the start relay ground the trigger post of the solenoid, the original post's schematic diagram would then have all the electricity used by the bike flowing from the battery + terminal through the starter solenoid and through the starter relay at all times.
No way.
Edit: I guess once the bike was running, the alternator could provide the power for the bike, but the battery would still have to be recharged through the starter relay and starter solenoid. I don't know of any relays or solenoids that would let it do that successfully.
