I just picked up a 1992 FLSTC last night for 3500. The bike has about 27k on the clock. I am pretty excited to have the bike.
The owner claimed that the top end was rebuilt at the end of last year's riding season with new jugs, pistons, heads, a performance cam, and s&s push rods. He said the reason for this rebuild was that the rear cylinder was not giving him the compression he wanted. He also said the bike ran excellent.
I'm a little skeptical of the above as when I got the bike home the carb was pissing fuel from the over flow and the rear exhaust has a leak. I also noticed the handlebar bushings are shot and the primary gasket is leaking.
I only heard the bike run for about a minute during the transaction. The bike was in a storage container in the guys yard and I was mainly just listening for any engine knocks at the time.
I'm going to call the old owner today to see if get any other info out of him about any issues the bike might have.
I don't mind doing the work, I just want to know what I need to look for.
I do really like the bike and am surprised at how much of the styling remains so similar over the years.
I am planning on slapping on some 14 inch apes on her but not much other than that.
I was wondering if you guys had any tips or anything I need to keep an eye on for this model year?

Thanks.
congratulations on the new ride , !!!
you might check the ignition pick up plate inside the nose cone , as the original ones would start to leak out the podding material over time ,caused by the high heat , this will cause a miss and then just quite all together some day out on the road somewhere ... https://www.google.com/search?q=orig...gK--2L4lY3ejM:

Check the torque on the exhaust flange may just need a lil turn if not super easy to change the gasket. and a needle and seat cleaning is simple to stop that fuel drip. And arent our primaries supposed to leak? I call it character and she marks her territory every time i park it. Haha, good looking ride congrats, all simple issues grab a factory service manual they are worth every penny, look on ebay for one

Pissing fuel from overflow is a dirty needle seat.
Get some polishing compound and come q-tips and clean it.
Rear exhaust leak - make sure the bolts are tight
I tried 14" apes but couldn't stand them right off the bat so I changed to 16" apes and love them.
Yeah, the float was out of adjustment so I took care of that last night and that issue is resolved. The carb looked pretty clean inside. There wasn't any debris or varnish. The jets weren't clogged either.
The exhaust nuts were all tight. The rear cylinder won't even fire unless the RPM's are at about 2k. That is how bad the leak is. I had the bike running for a bit this morning and it looks like the front exhaust is leaking too. I ran out to the dealer this morning and got two new gaskets so I plan on changing those out today.
I also stopped by Autozone and got a compression tester so I going to run that test as well.
At 6'2", 16's might be the way to go.
Thanks for all the compliments guys. I am looking forward to getting her running and hitting the road.
Hey dibe, Nice Softail, Sweet Deal! I have a 1999 FXSTC, last Big Twin Evo ! If the Nose Cone still has rivets holding it on, nobody's been in there! If it's held on with screws, somebody's done some improvement, hopefully ! I think the BEST Spark Plug for Big Twin Evo's are the Bosch B4478, 4 prong platinum tip, awesome! I got 57 mpg, coming back to Boston, from H-D's 100th ! I use AMSOIL 20W-50 motor, 10W-40 primary. & 75W-90 trans ! Good Luck, BJ
As others before me have said, nice bike for the price. Even if you have to put a couple grand into it, at this point, you are way ahead of the curve. Check it all over, find a good indy, and learn as much as you can and you'll be fine. Nothing easier to work on than an Evo. Congratulations and enjoy.
