Never had any issues using the oil HD recommends for each hole on my Harley's.
That's good, but a lot of us have had issues with the new oils in our old bikes. Especially for the primary, since the MoCo doesn't sell primary oil anymore. I, too, only used the HD oils UNTIL THEY STOPPED MAKING THEM. Now I use HD non-synthetic oil in the motor, full synthetic ATF (Mobil1 or Royal Purple, etc.) in the primary and the Mobil SHC-630 in the transmission. Shifts like butter, better than it ever has since new, and I opened the box it came in.
They probably put the new transmission oil in it. That's the new spec. I tried it. Made my bike shift bad, clunk, hard to find neutral, etc. Or they put that 20W50 synthetic "all three holes" stuff in.
Dr.Hess. You recommend that 630 over the redline? I'm due for a change soon and was going to replace with redline but if your saying 630 I'm inclined to try it
I wasn't aware they no longer sold primary oil. Wonder what they put in at the shop when they service our older evos?
they replaced primary oil and transmission oil with a single product called "Formula +". I still use Formula + in my primary, gear oil in the transmission and HD360 oil in the motor.
Redline is also very good stuff. I use MTL or MT90 in my Toyota boxes with syncros. I use the SHC630 in my bike because it is the base oil that Lotus used in their Renault transmissions so that the transmission would hold together at 400 HP when it was designed for 200-ish. I figure if it is good enough for that, it's good enough for the transmission in my bike. Unlike the Redline stuff, there are no friction modifiers in it, so it is too slipery for a syncromesh box. No syncros in our bike transmissions. They are dog boxes.
Anyway, it probably makes no difference at all, but that's what I use and as I said, it shifts better than it ever has in 85+K miles and 31 years.

Now that's funny to hear. I had them go over the 91last fall and after that I can't find neutral worth a damn. I thought it was a poorly adjusted clutch. I'm about to put the new cycle electric alternator kit in. What should I use to get smoother shifting in the primary and tranny?
