Could you install a set of SE Evo heads on this motor? Stock 1998 14K miles. Now last year I put a VThunder 3010 cam, new cam bearing and S&S lifters with Primo adjustable push rods. I was offered a set of New in the box SE Evo heads for real cheap. Id rather not change the cam again. From what I read the SE head can be used with stock pistons and will raise the compression to 9.5. What's your thoughts on just removing my heads and bolting the SE one on? Any gain to be had?
You'd really love those heads with a V-Thinder -Xtreme Energy 5010 in it. Really nice on a bagger..
Can't remember for sure, but I do believe that H-D does (or ... did ) make a Screamin' Eagle domed piston just for these heads ... Anyone ... ???
Believe they did in a 10.5-1 set up and a SE57 was it's mate. The SE heads seemed to follow the original Branch Heads in design plus dome pistons to fit the bathtub chambers like Branch

Several dyno runs listed with SE heads, my man John Sachs in there with a 109 hp 80" with SE Heads. Some 10.5 SE Head 80" posted, Cyclerama has a 132 hp SE headed 80" listed, they can produce some HP if the dynos's are not on the "happy" side, Sachs told me there are happy dyno's making runs.
Base gasket change is a must, and consider having a competent machinist true the bottoms of the cylinders, this will help prevent any future base gasket issues.

At this time you should figure your squish band before you machine the bottom of your cylinders. It's often over looked and performance may suffer.

Griz
Ran the V Thunder 5005 with SE heads, 89" sure was a neck snapper down low, didn't understand combination numbers or tuning back then and had trouble with detonation. Today with a carb that engine setup would live and be a torque monster, Sachs got on me hard "throw that junk M&M system and put a carb on it, what is wrong with you" learned at the University School of Mistakes.
