Default 1998 ultra base gasket leak

A small update yesterday on my bike after they got the motor out.
1. The wrist pins were pushing out towards the side and were ready to go.
2. The cases were not aligned properly and he said it looks like it came from the moco this way.
3. The cam bearing hole was wore out.

They will bore the heads out 5 thousand. Install new pistons.
He will align the cases and put in a new steel
ring in for the cam bearing and a new bearing.
Install a new cam and lifters and then I asked him to install a new oil pump so he will put in an S&S one for better pressure.
He did say now is the time to add an oil cooler if I wanted one.

Was this a stocker when you got it?

Wrist pins have keepers to keep 'em in place.

Were they missing or how did they determine they were about to go?
Just curious when I hear these types of statements from service writers.

It's a stock motor and the keepers were there but wore thru and almost gone.
They took the heads off to fix my base gaskets that blew out so this is how they saw it.
this indi was recommended by a long time friend of my sisters.

Never seen a set look like that before. That is very odd.

Lots of carbon up top too.

You get a ballpark price on all of this work? I've built all of my own except the 113" and my last 96" was kinda pricey after some upgrades to the cases.

Yeah, there's a couple of head-scratchers there.

Either the wrist pin clips were in place (in which case the wrist pins weren't going anywhere), or they weren't (in which case God only knows where they went and how much damage they caused). I suppose it's not impossible that they were never fully seated in the first place, but that not only seems very unlikely, it also seems like they would have come free a long time ago, to disastrous result. I suppose it's also possible that the clips were never installed at all, but again, very unlikely and also highly likely that something catastrophic would have happened long before now.

I'm also curios about

I think he must mean that the timing cover was not correctly matched to the right side case, and that the brass bushing that carries the end of the pinion shaft needs replaced. There's really no way for the two main case halves to not be aligned, and (short of some truly catastrophic event...like having the roller bearing lock up and spin the outer race in the case) no way for the hole in the right side case that holds the cam bearing to have any wear at all. But as with the wrist pin clips, if something was that wrong, you'd know.

That's a ton of carbon buildup on the top of those pistons

Cases off a little is possible I suppose, but wouldn't cause the cam bearing issue.

Cam cover has dowels to align it also, so I am confused on that part.

Never seen clips looking like that.

That my friend is a sign of a severely tweaked crank, bad enough would cause the case problems you have also.
