Default Left turn signal inop

I have an '86 Electra Glide with an inop left turn signal, front and back. I have swapped bulbs around so I know it is not a bad bulb. This bike has the signal buttons that stay in when pushed and then go off when pushed again. After trouble shooting the switch with my millimeter I determined that it was bad. My local dealer parts man said that H.D. does not make that switch anymore so he ordered one from an after market source. This new switch is the push in and hold type. I disconnected the leads from the old switch and temporarily connected the new one. With power on, the right signals worked, but still no left signals. Do I have another problem or is this push and hold switch not comparable with my bike.

I think it is a wiring issue. Need to trace the entire circuit wires and grounds. Also checking continuity and resistance of said wires and ground. You will find the culprit.
May be corrosion, May be a break under the wires insulation, may be a crudded up connector.
sorry for being brief, on the iPhone. YD

Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. I'll start by comparing the spec of your bike, as I understand it, with my 1990 Glide. You mention that your indicator switches press in/out, which I haven't come across before. My bike doesn't have that type of switch, however the switch assemblies look identical. I have an electronic module which controls the flashers, which I operate by simply pressing the switch to turn on, then press again to turn off - the switches have only one position, they don't stay 'in'. If I press both together all four flashers light up.

If your new switch operates your left indicators, except for having to hold the button in, you can consider the following. Replace the right switch with the same type, but also replace your flasher module, whatever that is, with a modern one, available from Badlands and other brands. That will give you the same functions as I describe, plus two nice new switches! Howzat?!

H-D has discontinued lots of parts for our Evos, including the stock electronic flasher module I have, however suitable alternatives are available. It's great to know that replacement switches are as well, so thanks for that.

Sounds like the switch is not the problem, remember, never troubleshoot electrical issues by buying parts...

Check to see if power is coming in to the switch, the wire that supplies power is green and runs from a junction just after the turn signal flasher and the switch.

Find a terminal on that green wire and touch your voltmeter probe to it, read the voltage (ignition switch on, you do not need to press the signal switch). You should see voltage going on and off just like a signal.

This will tell you if the problem is before or after the switch.
