Default '97 FLHT fork removal

Hey all. I am finally making some headway on my '97 ElectraGlide. New lifters and push rods are installed. Rear breaks rebuilt and new fluid with new EBC pads. S&S Super E installed.

Now onto the the front end. I picked up the Progressive mono-tube fork cartridges and those are next on the list. I bought the Motion Pro socket for the caps and broke them loose, and got rid of the air lines to the back fender.

The manual says to remove the pinch bolts and drift the legs out of the triple trees. Is there anything else I should be paying attention to here? How tight will they be? This is the first time the front end has ever been apart, bike has about 60k on it

You’re going to need an impact to get the bottom damping bolts out. Taking the forks tubes out of the trees is the easy part

You may well need to 'spring' the clamping part of the bottom tree, to free the tubes. I use a large screw-driver, tapped in with a mallet. I don't think I've ever had a bike on which the tubes are released and become free moving by simply undoing those clamp bolts.

You'll need a 6mm long shank flat tipped socket to get those bolts out.
Do not, I repeat, do not use a ball end socket as all you will do is strip the head of the bolt.

I'm not familiar with the Progressive units so I can't speak to the rest of your rebuild, but I will tell you to use carb cleaner or something to clean the inside bottom of your sliders. Our older bikes accumulate some nasty sludge in there.

It's also worth replacing the seals and bushings at the same time. Apparently the yuk that accumulates in the bottom of the sliders is from them.
