I have a 1998 fatboy , the carb is in need of a refresh . Should I jump in and buy the killer Carb from ebay 40 mm ? My next question is a 1998 fatboy have a 38 or 40 mm carb thank you ..
Most everyone on here will recommend a S&S super. And that's a fine carb to. But there is nothing wrong with the CV carb, I had mine done at Killers. you will not be sorry. He will ask what your set up is as far as mods to the motor. He polishes the slide and inside to an almost chrome appearance. replaces the plastic fuel inlet for Brass and a few other tricks. Mine worked perfect when I got it back, all you will have to do is set the idle mix.
some have said he returns them a little rich, Mine came back with 48/190. and that's what is still in it...
the CV is linier the S&S has a hit some guy need the seat in the pants pop when they hit it some don't care
CV gets better millage and will go to the top of mountains with out any adjustments as its a booted slide carb
I think your autocorrect ate the first sentence.
I like cv carbs and they do fine. But if I am building a bike new or a bike doesn't have a carb at all and I need one, I will always go s&s. I wouldn't simply change out a perfectly good cv carb for an s&s because

some years back we had a Buell road race team and a buell Harley dealer gave us free time on the then new dyno jet - jimmy miller the guy who was the lead guy in the shop ran it the dyno, and we did use it quite a bit testing everything you can think of and before every race from 95 to 2000
learned a lot - best for the bucks is a mikuni hands down - if money is no object then FRC is the way to go but a G wiz for a carb 20 some years ago was a bit much but we did it
we used a test mule dupe machine and had dyno jet give us a program, that would allow us to plot the engage time against the max RPM on the 900 pound drum the dyno machine had - in seconds mapped to so we could over lap them on a spread sheet - very use full for road racing out of one corner to a straight into another corner so using one gear and every combo you want to think of and 25 gallons of fuel each time, a few times a week we put our finger on it, what it takes and how to do it in real time
amazingly the CV carb was a real surprise every time I thought we had found the end - we would make a change and it had more to give - I have maybe 25 CV body's that we modded in different ways, in the end stock or near stock the kinsler shined above all - now this is a race platform with 116 fuel and an unlimited engine the kinsler kit or alike was not in our focus - a street bike with 100 to the tire still can carry the CV and get the best fuel economy doing it . BUT it does not meet the bent arm boys at the bar talking about what works verses what don't sooooooo my take someone else may have a different one and that's fine with me
