Hi all I have a 99 fat boy with 36,000 miles. I bought it at 24,000 with no previous history. I knew I needed to change lifters and cam bearing but decided to do a ev27 too. Although I pulled the rockers and cam chest apart to find a ev46 in there already. I don't know whether to change to the 27 or keep the 46 everything I find isn't helping. What would the evo world suggest. Mods I know of are hsr42, air cleaner and now ev46 and thanks.
If the motor is stock, the EV 27 cam works really well; smooth low end power, very rideable. However if any other work was done, like heads, the 46 may work better.
Before you do anything, do a compression test. The 46 is a more aggressive cam and usually gets head work and a bump in compression... Works pretty god in a fat boy. It's really not made for heavy bikes... What other mods? Exhaust, pushrods, lifters, gearing, Ignition?
I think I will change the lifters and cam bearing for now. I will put rocker boxes back together to fix my leak and check compression then. If it seems stock then I will go back and try the ev27. It did move pretty good but I had no other evo to compare to all Twinkies here. It also has stock ignition at the moment dyna 2000I will be here shortly.
Most likely the cam bearing was already done when the cam swap was made to the 46.. I don't think your going to feel any more power with just a cam swap to the 27.
Remember to hold the throttle wide open when checking compression.
Take a look at the head gaskets, see if you can see the rivets that hold MLS type gaskets together, that could provide a clue if the heads been off.
Placed the order for quikee s and s and Johnson hylift lifters. I put the rocker boxes back on did the front first noticed on the rear that the rocker support had two different bolt lengths and now has me worried about the front one.it made a noise when snuging all bolts up It was like a metal to metal sound like a ping hopefully all goes well never any resistance though
