Wow! Thanks, That's quite a detailed explanation 98hotrodfatboy, and now I actually understand. The math you were able to show makes a whole bunch more sense. That's exactly what I was looking for to make the decision and now I know what I'm gonna do. I've had a 65 tooth pulley hanging in my shop for 15 years, maybe I can finally get some use out of it. Can you guys recommended a good source for a replacement belt and mfg?
I think you may want to ask HotRod those questions. I just get lucky sometimes and know where to find some information. The last five Harleys that I've owned have been stock right down to the air filter & exhaust.
If you go to the HD Service Info Portal, there is a lot of info available. The searches can be funny sometimes from what I've found. For example, if I enter "1988 parts" it returned 248 results and the one I wanted was 246 of 248. Now If I entered "1987 parts" result #3 was 1987-1990 All 1340cc Models Parts Catalog. You can also get wiring diagrams and can zoom in on the area you want.
I'm taking a big guess here but if you take the sprocket teeth numbers listed above and try this it equaled the overall gear ratio for 5th gear. I'm guessing 5th gear is 1:1 ratio. Try this (clutch divided by engine) multiplied by (rear wheel divided by Transmission)
I only tried it for the numbers listed above so I'm not sure if it's just coincidence or if that's the way you're supposed to figure it out.

Stock 80" bore, with new cases, cylinders and pistons all HD. Got the new cases courtesy of HD under warranty when a crank bearing spun the race. SE heads lightly massaged and matched to the Mikuni manifold, Jims roller rockers, lightweight spring retainers and pushrods, Jim's Big axle lifters, SE 57 Cam, and rebuilt and balanced rods and crank. Crane single fire programmable ignition, coil and Fire Wires, red line 6500. Krank Vent, RB Racing Black Hole exhaust, Mikuni 42 carb. The chassis has been worked a bit too, Race Tech cartridge emulators and springs in the front forks, 12 wt Bel Rey fork oil, all air stuff removed. 6 piston Performance Machine differential bore brake calipers grabbing EBC narrow band floating discs. All stainless steel braided brake lines front and rear and Jay Brake controls. Glide Pro swing arm kit and motor mount, Stock HD air shocks with 10 wt Bel Rey fork oil, and everything that doesn't have a purpose removed from the bike to lighten it up. All internal wiring, original Harley controls ditched in favor of cleaner Jay Brake controls, my own custom turn signals and controls for them, horn, high beam and starter. Cruise control adapted from a car and hidden, Michelin tires. Probably more just can't think of it right now.

Was looking at belts on the J+P website and according to them 136 teeth is the stock belt for my bike, but it's a moot point. They offer either a 135 or 132, one's probably too big and the other is too small. Doesn't matter though at close to 200 bucks I'm gonna have to pass for now. Most likely going to go with the Baker setup as it came.
Got everything installed and buttoned back up finally. Started the bike up on the stand today since the temp was like 75 and all seems good, no leaks, rattles or noises. seems to shift very smoothly into first. Can't wait to take it for a test ride.

Finally got it off the stand and out for a test ride. Covered about 100 miles of combined freeway and back roads, everything from 85 mph cruising to 30 mph plodding, trans is everything I hoped it would be, smooth, quiet and shifts slicker than snot. I was right though, 6th gear seems like overkill, I can still roll on and pull from 70 to 80 easily enough to pass but cruising at 80 is not what I do a lot of. I can't drop a tooth on the comp sprocket ( really what I would like to do ) but a 26 tooth doesn't exist, so I'm gonna have to wait until service is required to the inner primary to change the trans pulley to a 30. Gonna be a while though, everything is oil tight and working perfectly so tearing the primary apart seems stupid at this point.
