FWIW I consider uneven wear to be damage.
If it doesn't wear right it won't track right.

I second to check the goose neck bearings. My top bearings wore a flat spot in them. Did not catch it till I stress cracked the bottom tree. I had repacked the sliders a couple times for leaks before, and torqued the top tree nut to the tire fall-away spec, but never visually looked at the bearing until I needed to replace the lowere triple tree. Changed the cup n bearing both. Just a step to check if your going to pull the top tree. Good luck--------------RJ

Update:
Finally got around to taking off the forks today and damn were they rusted in place!!!!
I don't think that front end has been off since the bike was new.

I think (didn't measure what came out) the left fork was way lower on fluid than the right fork.

Anyhow now to get the progressive springs in and new bushing etc and install them.
Gonna polish up the lower legs since it's apart so I probably won't get it assembled for a few days.

Hey Mike, when I did my front end I believe I went a 1/2" over the suggested plug length and went with 15 weight oil.. Best thing I think I ever did... Nice and firm but still vey smooth... Actually picked the front up a tad.....

Was the oil still oil or did it turn into paste ? If you remember my thread, mine oozed out the drain plugs like toothpaste when I compressed them to get it all out before disassembling.

Also consider Mobil 1 synthetic automatic transmission fluid. I like how it feels in my dyna. Lots of conditioners in it to keep the seals at their best. Change it once a year.

It's viscosity is 15 weight at 100*F (cST at 40* Celcius is 36.3 which converts to 15 weight at 100F). YD

It was still oil.
Not even all that dirty because I changed it when I got the bike a couple years ago.

Update:
Got the lowers back from a friend this morning (he polished them for me) so I put everything back together.
During assembly I broke part of the fork brace...damn it!!!!
Found a cheap one on ebay that will be here Friday.

Cut off the old gremlin bell that came with the bike and replaced it with one I had laying around the shop...hope it does better than the last one!!!!
