I also did have to take my 127 rear rocker box off of my FXR and yes it was a bitch...I had to put a block of wood under the motor and take off the front motor mount.
lol,if ya'll will stop and think,if the 3 piece can come off and on while in the frame then so can the 2 piece,at least on my 89 it can, yeah i checked the specs
While I don't know about baggers on a softail you have to take the rear rocker boxes apart like a jigsaw puzzle to get it all off in the frame. You have to take the rocker arms out before you can remove the second layer.
As I said before there is no way in hell you can get a 2 piece rockerbox off the rear jug in the frame on a softail.
To be able to remove the rear box you would need about 1/4" more clearance.
I don't know if baggers are the same way but for your sake I hope not.
Just because a 3 piece is leaking does not mean the mechanic did anything wrong, it is a **** poor design.
I`m on my second set of rocker box covers on my `89, the first set warped, and the center piece got so soft it would warp way out of shape when the top piece was installed and torqued, it would bulge out so much you could see inside...
If I knew the 2 piece design could be installed in the frame, I would toss those 3 piece parts into the scrap barrel in a minute.
So far there have been several people in this thread who say the parts cannot be installed, but they have never actually attempted to install these units...
Maybe someone who actually has some real knowledge will jump in.

Why ask if you intend on telling everyone their wrong?
BTW, my rocker boxes do not leak and never have leaked despite being original.
As THC said: You have to take the rocker arms out before you can remove the second layer on the rear head, As least thats the way it is my 98 bagger. No way would a 2 section work As is with out removing the front motor mount and even then its going to be close. But NO i have never tryed....

Something is not right with your parts then. I've got the original 30 year old set on my FLHS and they've been on and off a half a dozen times without leaking. I'm using the rubber gaskets, are you still using the old cork gaskets?

I have heard of instances of the rocker boxes warping for various reasons. Placing them on something perfectly flat like a sheet of glass is an easy way to determine if that is what happened. Once warped, its better to replace them instead of trying to fix or correct them.
Put a set of Ultima's on mine found replacement gaskets were had to find. Went back to the 3 piece just as good and no leaks. Some things are best left alone.
