Wow I don't see the main connector to the ignition switch (3 wire Spade connector) as well. Looks like some one totally replace the wiring harness....

Sorry now I see it flopped over to the side. Color codes are wrong for a 98. Someone definitely replaced the harness. Get the electrical schematic For your bike and add the speed sensor and Speedo circuit back in... Totally doable. All the other Blake wires under the dash are for your indicator and warning lights.

The 3 wire ignition switch connector is there, lower right corner in picture. That's about the only original connector left.

I know I need to get a speed sensor, but do I also need to get the adaptor harness to connect to the speedometer? As you can see there is no real harness left. Everything is pretty much hard wired.

You might find this helpful: http://www.harleytechtalk.com/index.php?topic=9596.0

They've got a breakout for the wiring going to the 12 pin connector that you should have. On my machine, I've got an adapter from V-twin that goes between it and the indicator lights with the original speedo wiring clipped.

Up to you if you want to find part of a wiring harness to pull apart and add back some HD stuff to make it easier for the next guy, or roll your own.

Thanks for the diagram. If that is all correct that should be what I need to wire up the speedo into the disaster pile of wiring i am currently dealing with.
