Default 96 FXSTS Fuel Capacity

Anyone know the size of the fuel tank that came on the 96 FXSTS? I have tried searching and some sources say 4 gal while others say 5 gal. My bike has a 5 gal and I notice a lot of people always notice the 5 gal tank when talking with me. Just wondering if previous owner may have changed it or not.

5 gallon is correct for a Softail custom and Springer Softail. I think there were some Heritages with 4.2 gallons.

Thanks. I was mainly just curious why my tank keeps getting so much attention from others.

They have a tendency to look wider on a Softail custom.

I might be wrong about the Springer Softail

The fuel capacity , or range is really more accurate, is the one thing I don't like about my bike, especially after the engine refresh / cam etc. I have to switch to reserve at 140 or 150 miles. I wish I could get 200 or 220 out of tank because sometimes gas stations are far apart, especially when I am exploring.

Still trying to get myself in riding condition. It's been so long, and after something pretty horrific I dealt with Thursday night at work, it made me more anxious to get back to riding to clear my head.

I can get to 175 miles without hitting reserve, but when I put gas in it's right at 5 gallons.

FWIW all the FXST's came with 5.2 gallon tanks and all the FLST's came with 4.2 gallon tanks.

You can get a 5 gallon tank to fit on your bike but you'll have to grind down a bit of your windshield mount to get it to fit.
